BANGKOK, Thailand, 12 January 2017 – Ford Motor Company today announced overall 2016 retail sales for the ASEAN region rose more than 11 percent from the previous year to a record 115,979 vehicles, marking the fourth consecutive year of record sales in ASEAN.
Ford’s 2016 performance was driven record sales for the third consecutive year in both the Philippines and Vietnam, as well as continued market share gains in Thailand amid a domestic industry that declined for the fourth consecutive year.
"The Ranger pickup, Everest and EcoSport SUVs, and Transit commercial van continued to lead our progress in ASEAN, offering a leading choice in highly competitive segments with increasingly higher customer expectations for great design, versatility and smart technologies,” explained Mark Kaufman, president, Ford ASEAN.
The segment-defining and Thai-built Ranger led Ford’s ASEAN performance with sales increasing nearly 15 percent from 2015 to an all-time record of 62,160 vehicles.
In 2016, Ranger continued as the best-selling pickup truck in Vietnam, Cambodia and Myanmar, as well as the second-best seller in the Philippines and Malaysia.
Ranger sales were given another boost in 2016 with the introduction of several new variants across the ASEAN markets, including the Ranger FX4 – a special variant of the Ranger XLT that features a tougher and sportier appearance with additional premium features.
“The Ranger continues to set the industry benchmark in the pickup segment with an unmatched combination of smart technologies, capability, fuel efficiency, design, and comfort – all without compromising on its rugged, ‘Built Ford Tough’ heritage,” said Kaufman.
Exceptional demand for the Everest mid-size SUV helped deliver overall ASEAN sales that rose 84 percent year-over-year to 20,648 vehicles as it became Ford’s second best-selling vehicle in the region.
As one of the smartest vehicles in its segment, the Everest features Ford’s SYNC 3 connectivity system, Curve Control, Blind Spot Information System with Cross Traffic Alert, Roll Stability Control, Electronic Stability Program and Active Park Assist.
Market segment leadership and record full-year sales in both the Philippines and Vietnam for the EcoSport compact SUV contributed to the ASEAN total with retail sales of 18,413 vehicles.
Built on Ford’s global B-segment platform, the EcoSport continues to delight customers with its combination of small-car practicality and agility of an SUV.
Market Share Gains, Record Sales
Thailand continued to lead Ford’s overall performance in ASEAN with full-year sales rising 12 percent to 40,972 vehicles. With industry sales declining for the fourth consecutive year, Ford continued to outpace the market with full-year share rising to 5.4 percent, up from 4.6 percent in 2015.
Thailand sales were driven by a record year for both the Ranger and Everest. Ranger’s full-year sales grew 29 percent to 30,754 vehicles, helping its segment share increase by 1.9 percentage points to 9.2 percent. Full-year sales of the Everest increased 42 percent to 7,111 vehicles.
In the Philippines, Ford delivered record full-year sales that rose 33 percent to 33,688 vehicles, helping total market share increase 0.6 points from 2015 to 8.5 percent.
The Everest was Ford’s best-seller in the Philippines with full-year sales rising 152 percent to 12,453 units. The EcoSport delivered record sales that climbed 15 percent to 10,010 vehicles, while Ranger remained the second best-selling pickup in the market with total sales of 8,158 vehicles.
Ford delivered a record full-year performance in Vietnam with full-year sales rising 40 percent to 29,011 vehicles, driving its market share up 1.0 percentage point to 9.5 percent. Ranger remained Vietnam’s best-selling pickup truck for the third consecutive year with sales jumping 62 percent to a best-ever full-year of 14,058 vehicles.
The Transit remained the best-seller in Vietnam’s commercial bus and van segment for the third consecutive year with sales jumping 22 percent to all-time best 6,850 vehicles.
The EcoSport also led its segment in Vietnam and achieved record full-year sales that increased 36 percent to 5,413 vehicles.
