Ford executives led the turnover of a new communal water facility that provides access to potable water for over 100 families in GK Sto. Nino Village in Bato. Prior to the new facility being built, residents had to get water from a stream one kilometer from the village.
Ford executives also visited residents of GK Polpogan Village to unveil a concrete water tank that supplies clean water through PVC pipes directly to 26 households.
“Leyte was a unanimous choice for us to support, being one of the provinces that was greatly affected by super typhoon Haiyan in 2013,” said Josie Gonzalez, AVP for government and corporate affairs, Ford Philippines. “Ford is proud to continue initiatives that provide long-term benefits for these communities.”
Building a communal water system in GK communities in Leyte was conceived when Ford Fund through Global Giving made available mini-grants for projects that will promote volunteerism during Ford’s Global Month of Caring.
Ford decided on Leyte and efforts to build sustainable water supply in the community by finding a safe and clean water source, including a set-up of a water catchment facility and a common area of laundry and other household chores.
Since 2014, the project has included eight water facilities built around Leyte, helping provide over 700 families with access to clean water. The mini-grant has continued to support the communal water project, supported by Ford dealer employees, GK residents and local students all serving as volunteers.
